I didn’t read the blurb for this book so had no idea what it was about, and after reading quite a way through I still didn’t understand where it was going! The story is from Faiths POV and begins on New Years Eve 1999 when she is told by her boss she doesn’t have to work, she can go home and enjoy the evening like the rest of the world. For most people this would be a bonus but for Faith it’s not, she has no plans for the evening and would rather be at work. In the first few pages we learn that Faith is an ex-smoker and goes to support meetings (like AA for ex smokers) and that Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, Second Movement, Allegretto is one of her favourite pieces of music!!!!! Music is a large part of Faith’s world, we are given an in depth run down of Elton John’s Tumbleweed Album track for track like a review of his work, though I still don’t see the relevance of this information to the plot…. Mmm what plot??
I eventually discovered that the story was about Faith and her life in the 90’s, so it’s kind of a ‘flash back’ book. I also discovered that Suzanne Davis is a huge music fan, who ‘feels’ the music because we also had a track for track review of a Tori Amos Album!! Faith has some very odd and confusing dreams, she sees a therapist about them who hypnotises her and takes her back to her child hood but we never really find out the cause of them (though it’s possible it was the tornado she was in when she was young) I spent the whole book waiting for something to happen, for her to be attacked or find out something really bad had happened to her as a child but nothing really did…. No-one was injured or died in the tornado so ok yeah that’s ‘badish’ but not like losing someone close… Although she did lose her sister to leukaemia but it doesn’t really go into detail about that so I’m not sure when it happened.
It is one of those books that has left me thinking “okay what was the point?” because that’s just how I feel, I neither liked or disliked it, the writing was fine but the story was….well about as interesting as my life in the 90’s was and the whole point of me reading a book is to escape and be entertained and I don’t really feel like I was. Sorry!
